Larry Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors

Corporate Departure
The former official announced he would withdraw from public duties after House committee released his regular messages with Jeffrey Epstein

One-time economic leader Larry Summers is exiting the board at OpenAI, just a week after a batch of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became publicly available.

He commented in a release that he was "thankful for the chance to have contributed, excited about the prospects of the enterprise, and eagerly await observing their advancement".

The prominent academic, who previously presided over Harvard University, declared on earlier this week that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his connections with Epstein.

Email Communications

The recently released communications showed that the economist communicated with the financier until the 24 hours preceding the financier's 2019 detention for suspected trafficking of underage individuals.

In additional comments, the technology organization said it respected his choice to step down.

"We acknowledge his significant contributions and the perspective he offered to the Board," the organization stated.

Congressional Action

This announcement follows after the two houses of the US legislature voted on recently to approve a bill that would compel the federal prosecutors to disclose its documents on the case.

The legislation will then move to the office of the White House for signature. Trump has said he intends to sign the legislation, after reversing his stance on the subject following pushback from his followers.

Correspondence Findings

A collection of Epstein-connected correspondence disclosed by the House Oversight Committee recently mentioned several high-profile figures in the financier's former circle, without indicating any legal wrongdoing by those figures.

The messages indicated that Summers and the financier regularly had dinners together, with he often trying to link the academic to notable international personalities.

Personal Accountability

After the messages were made available with the public, the former official said he accepted "full responsibility for my misguided decision to persist in interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".

He added that he hoped "to rebuild faith and fix bonds with the persons closest to me".

Previous Positions

The professor occupied high-level positions under party leaders; functioning as economic leader under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the White House economic team under President Obama.

He led Harvard from five years and remains a professor there. When stating his step-down from public commitments previously on Monday, he said he would continue his educational duties.

Additional Consequences

Following the economist's statement on earlier this week, the policy organization, a liberal research organization in the capital where the professor was a senior fellow, announced that the economist was no longer connected with the group.

Summers became part of the directorate of the technology firm, which makes ChatGPT, in 2023 - following a failed attempt to replace its CEO OpenAI's head.
