Escaping Solo Parent Holiday Hell to Pet-Sitting Bliss: A Parent's Journey
After the relationship concluded, I believed vacations as a single parent would be straightforward. I soon realized they proved either outrageously costly, otherwise appeared only suitable for “traditional” families, or were far too budget that I came back more knackered than when I started.
Early Holiday Experiences
My first attempt, tenting alongside companions, was fine up until the moment came to pack up our shelter. Hours of wrestling with the tent under the sun afterward, I hated the outdoors. Next, an adventurous trip for solo-parent households. The abseiling and exploring caves were fantastic, but sleeping in a bunk bed ruined my back. We attempted a budget package in Tenerife, but the crowds of nuclear families were overwhelming, and poolside conversations with fellow ladies fizzled out since I didn’t accompanied by a convenient partner for their spouses to chat with. An excursion to Mallorca alongside a pal and her children was wonderful, but the expense was staggering.
Discovering Pet-Sitting
Later, last autumn, an acquaintance inquired if we could look after her pets within the county as she attended to a wedding. During a peaceful weekend, we walked on the beach, and settled by the fire at night. This prompted to house-sitting for her associate in the region, which proceeded well. Inspired, I subscribed with an annual £99 membership to register on a pet-sitting website, through which, in exchange for caring for people’s pets, you stay in their homes free of charge. Within a few days, I’d arranged a 10-day pet-sit in Sussex, looking after a labrador called Buzz while the proprietors were abroad.
Each day's walks provided the chance to discover breathtaking nature spots.
It was our first assignment for unknown individuals, but any nerves vanished the moment we reached the gorgeous spacious house and met the gentle Buzz, who thrived for belly scratches. Our daily dog walks gave us the opportunity to explore magnificent scenic areas, and, once we came home, we were able to unwind in the garden for important conversations about our favourite “Ghosts” personas in the television series. We avoided no expensive tourist traps to wander around – rather, we perused bookshops, indulged to nail care, and embarked on kayak trips. I experienced lighter and more joyful than ever in years, and noticed the connection alongside my child Polly deepen daily. I’m not afraid to admit that I cried with happiness. Things felt achievable once more.
Could Pet-Sitting Right for You?
Pet-sitting isn’t suitable for all. Certain individuals prefer zero duties during vacations other than selecting their next cocktail, are not fond of pets, or perhaps feel odd regarding sleeping in a someone else’s bed, clearing their dishwasher, and putting out their bins. However the gentle pace of ordinary living, with employment removed and fresh locations to investigate, is perfect for me.
It keeps myself from descending into total inactivity, a state that makes me experience twitchy and oddly hollow. And, financially, pet-sitting acts as a life-saver for a solo mother. A 10-day getaway in a comparable house in the same region we stayed would set me back approximately £2,500 on Airbnb.
A New Outlook
Regarding residing in a stranger’s home, I discovered it enriching. Even though house-sitting is a exchange, it is equally an act of faith among strangers and creatures, which has unleashed the finest version of me – my patient, loving and measured side, full of appreciation for the individuals and places we discover. I’ve already scheduled an additional short break away, caring for a sighthound in leafy Surrey, and, next year, I’d like to try house-sitting abroad. Due to a bit of creative planning, we can experience the globe from the coziness of a home – it just turns out to be someone else’s.
