At least 64 Killed in Rio's Most Extensive Law Enforcement Operation on Criminal Groups

No less than 64 individuals died in a law enforcement action targeting the Red Command gang in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the largest and deadliest raid in the region's records.

Four police officers lost their lives during Operation Containment in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, state officials said. Over 80 people were taken into custody.

Fierce clashes commenced when around 2,500 security personnel entered the area on Tuesday early hours. The criminal organization responded with armed resistance, igniting obstacles and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, police representatives said.

The UN Human Rights Office said it was "horrified" by the police operation, calling for "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Operation Impact

The slum neighborhoods close to the city's international airport is seen as the main base of a major criminal organizations.

Local authorities said no less than 50 of those killed were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Many residents were wounded, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Residents have described the mountainous region - inhabited by approximately 300,000 individuals - to a "combat area" since the raid started.
